TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

7 Tips For Recent Grads When Working With Recruiters

After graduating college or right before getting their diploma many entry-level job seekers are exposed to recruiters for the first time. One of the main reasons for this is that many career centers are not too keen on headhunters primarily due to the fact that some recruitment professionals act in a manner that is perceived not to be in the best interest of the college graduate.

Therefore, many entry-level job seekers have little to no idea about the staffing industry until they are initially contacted by a recruitment agency. When I graduated college, I was recruited by a professional recruiter in Minneapolis whom I knew little to nothing about in a job that I hated for company that was antiquated and not progressive in their thinking. Luckily, this worked out for me.

Regardless, the below advice should help recent college graduates effectively deal with recruiters.

1. Only engage with recruiters who have jobs that pay a base salary.

2. Only engage with recruiters who do not charge the job applicants nor actively push resume services or other job seeking consulting services before the headhunters consider you for a job.

3. Only engage with recruiters who will tell you the name of the company that they are working with prior to interviewing with that firm. However, as a job seeker you should be responsible and confidential about the companies that are hiring as not doing so is highly unethical and is a form of corporate theft.

4. Upon approaching a recruiter or any particular executive search firm, do enough research on the staffing agency prior to initial contact and make sure that the firm deals with jobs that you may like.

5. If a recruiter sends you to meet with a client, remember that upon interviewing with that firm, you are not only representing yourself, but also the recruiter who sent you on that particular interview.

6. Have realistic expectations as nobody will find your perfect job for you without you doing the necessary legwork. Recruiters can only do so much; you have to help the recruiters help you.

7. Only work with recruiters whom you feel comfortable with. As a recent college graduate, remember that you've worked hard for your degree and, if you don't feel comfortable with the direction a recruiter is taking you, either voice your opinion and see if the individual changes or change recruiters.

In the end, working with recruiters is not brain science, however make sure you have enough information and, upon gathering this information make a decision whether or not you would like to approach head hunters at this point in time.

There are more ethical, hard-working recruiters than the bunch that you often hear about and, working with recruiting firms, if done properly is a good way to diversify your job search.

Apple gets partial win in HTC patent case

In breaking legal news this afternoon, CNET is reporting that Apple has won a partial victory in its patent suit against HTC. Patent expert Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents tweeted (above) that the result could be a ban on many or all HTC Android products from the U.S. market.

The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that HTC had infringed on two Apple patents that were included in an earlier lawsuit. HTC is expected to appeal the decision.

4 More Marketing Definitions That Every Young Job Seeker Should Know

1. Anchor text - anchor text is a link to another page or website that, instead of showing a www., the link is displayed in text usually telling the website visitor exactly what type of site or page that particular link is pointing to.

Here is an example of how anchor text is programmed in HTML:

Your Domain

As you can see, the link above no longer will show up as www.yourdomain.com, instead it will read "Your Domain."

For the website owner, anchor text links are more valuable (all things being equal), then basic "www." links.

2. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) - search engine marketing refers to marketing campaigns that aim to achieve more visibility for a particular website. SEM goes after targeted keywords a.k.a. to rank highly in what is called the"SERPs" or search engine ranking page.

3. Pay Per Click - pay per click (PPC) is an advertising medium where the website owner bids on particular keywords to successfully advertise on the top of Google upon individuals searching for keywords that the advertising party chooses.

Every time the advertisement is clicked on, the website owner is charged whatever their bid is for that keyword phrase.  You can see the websites engaging in pay per click advertising as they are listed on the top with a different color background.

Pay per click can be a great medium to advertise or, if the website has a high bounce rate marketing budgets can quickly be milked attempting a successful pay per click campaign.

4. "Do Follow" and "No Follow" Tags - the aforementioned terms refer to HTML links or anchor text links and are links that either aim to let Google search and count that particular link for search engine purposes or, "No Follow" tags aim to block the Google search engine from counting that particular link. Whether or not the latter successfully blocks the search engine giant, it is still known as a " expletive" thing to do by linking to another site with a "No Follow" tag.

"Do Follow" Tag Ex:

Your Domain

"No Follow" Tag Ex:

Your Domain .

Not Raising The Debt Ceiling Will Only Make Big Government Even More Important

white house

WASHINGTON, DC – Leading United States congressmen are determined to provoke a showdown with the Obama administration over the federal government’s debt ceiling.

Ordinarily, you might expect House Republicans to blink at this stage of the negotiations, but there is a hardline minority that actually appears to think that defaulting on government debt would not be a bad thing.

These representatives – with whom I've interacted at three congressional hearings recently – are convinced that the US federal government is too big relative to the economy, and that drastic measures are needed to bring it under control. Depending on your assessment of “Tea Party” strength on Capitol Hill, at least a partial debt default does not seem as implausible as it did in the past – and recent warnings from ratings agencies reflect this heightened risk.

Windows 8 getting a built-in PDF reader, Metro-style

For what seems like an eternity, Download Squad readers have reacted to news of security exploits targeting Adobe Reader with a common sentiment: why doesn't Microsoft build its own secure PDF reader into Windows? Apparently the Windows 8 team agrees, and they're working away at an application called Modern Reader which is exactly that.

From the handful of screenshots Paul Thurrott has shared, it's clear that Modern Reader has been built with Metro in mind. You can see the Reader back button in the top-left corner of the yellow image and the minimal page navigation bar on the right. We've posted some larger images we managed to scrape from Google's cache after the break.

Thurrott also mentions that Modern Reader is the first program spotted which is built using AppX -- a packaging technology that may allow developers to roll a single build to both Windows 8 desktops and Windows Phone 8 mobile devices.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.
